Curcumin, the plant compound that gives turmeric that bright yellow color has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer and neuroprotective properties in laboratory and animal studies. Human studies have been mostly positive.
A primary issue with turmeric is its difficulty in being absorbed from the human stomach. Now newer and more bioavailable forms have been developed. This will allow for larger and more conclusive studies.
Given the preliminarily strong data and very low side effect profile, turmeric should be part of everyone’s supplement regimen!
